The short answer: at Matsu Conseil, between €900 and €1,500 excl. VAT per day depending on the role and the duration, refined in a quote. Across the market, industry studies put the average at around €1,000 to €1,300 excl. VAT per day, with wide variations from one role to another (France Transition).
How the price is calculated
An interim manager is billed at a day rate (often called the TJM, taux journalier moyen), multiplied by the number of days worked. The assignment can be full-time or part-time, for example 2 or 3 days a week. Any travel expenses are added on top, and disappear when part of the work is done remotely.
What makes the rate vary
- The level of the role: a CEO position is not billed like a site manager position.
- Complexity and urgency: a crisis or a procédure collective (French insolvency proceedings) calls for specific experience.
- Duration and pace: a long or part-time assignment is negotiated differently.
- Rare skills: a WMS or ERP project, a highly specialised sector.
- Location: on site, remote or a mix of both.
Some orders of magnitude
By way of illustration, with a rate of €900 to €1,500 excl. VAT per day, excluding expenses:
| Assignment | Days billed | Indicative budget |
|---|---|---|
| Audit with findings presentation | 3 days | €2,700 to €4,500 excl. VAT |
| 3 months at 3 days a week | about 36 days | €32,400 to €54,000 excl. VAT |
| 6 months full-time | about 120 days | €108,000 to €180,000 excl. VAT |
The actual quote depends on the exact scope, agreed during the first conversation.
More expensive than hiring?
Per day, yes. But hiring a senior executive also has a cost: salary plus employer contributions, recruitment fees, several months' lead time and a probationary period. An interim manager is up and running within a few days, you only pay for the days worked, with no social security contributions or end-of-contract payments, and the assignment ends once the objective is met.
Firm or independent?
An independent contracted directly can be cheaper. A firm selects the profile, guarantees continuity if the assignment changes and brings in complementary expertise: at Matsu Conseil, a network of 20 partner consultants.
